The Little Things

Oh how the  littlest things in life bring a smile to my face.  This week is bascially the worst week of the year for most college students, finals week.  My facebook is full of statuses from friends about coffee, papers, sleep deprivation, and 24 hour library study sessions.  I find I am the most emotionally confused and emotionally jumbled during finals week because I am nervous/scared for getting that A on my final physics exam, excited the semester is over, happy to see my family for christmas, and worried about all the weight I will gain from eating to relieve stress.  And here I am in a Starbucks writing a blog about this while I should be studying for my two finals tomorrow, but I am super hyped up on caffein right now and just so many things in my day have brought me joy and smiles.  Minus talking to my roommates this morning about finals and our broken water heater, I have been alone all day.

My greek myth teacher last minute decided to offer extra credit if we went to a museum and wrote a report.  So of course me being the biggest procrastinator ever thought this was the best opportunity to procrastinate and not study for my political science and anthropology final for tomorrow.  First of all, I have never been to the Getty Villa Museum in Malibu, so simply the drive there along the coast was absolutely beautiful even on this gloomy day.  Stopped at the stop light I couldn't help but look at the ocean and happened to see a group of dolphins swimming and jumping in the water....and there goes smile numero uno : ).  Dolphins are so free and just get to swim in the ocean all day, makes me jealous.   Finally, I arrive at the Getty thinking sarcastically, "Yes! Boring museums," but I was wrong.  The Getty was gorgeous and the sculptures of the greek gods and godesses for some reason brought on smile number two.  It might have been the fact that there was a group of young kids learning why all the greek athletes were naked or because this husband was pushing his wife in her wheel chair with the biggest smiles on their faces.  Oh yea a a security guard at the museum was the first employee to talk to me and he said "Being that beautiful should be a crime," which had me laughing for a good ten minutes.  Anyways, the sculptures, pictures, vases, bowls depicting greek myths, gods, and goddesses were just so beautiful.  Sounds cheesy, but art like that and knowing people had the imagination or beliefs in these myths was just so magical.

Finally, the sculptures and paintings had given me all the information I needed and decided why not go to a Starbucks in Santa Monica, Hollywood, or Los Angeles area and get some studying done before I go back to my apartment.  After searching for the right Starbucks, I end up here in LA somewhere.  Get my starbucks start studying, after 40 minutes or so this older couple comes in.  Man looks like a professor or business man, super deep voice and a little old lady looks like a business woman.  She has pearls, curly hair, glasses, and a little smirk on her face.  This couple sits at the table next to me.  They begin talking, not about work or anything but they are simply joking around and he is making fun of her.  By far the cutest thing ever.  She then says something about emailing someone and he replies "oh you emailed her?"  She says " noooo. you emailed her! Let's tell her we will come up for christmas on this day and that way we can spend of few days on our own and a few days with her" (I am assuming there daughter).  Just seeing a relationship like this brings smile number four now (I think I was at four).  They start packing up their things and the woman says "I realized I pulled you out of your office too early."  And he said "Yea you did, I was going to get some more work done too."  Ok so he left his office early because his wife picked him up, soooo cute.  I love seeing relationships that are put first before a job or anythings else, true love.  I was trying not to laugh and smile while all this was going on because I would probably look a little stupid smiling and laughing while I am typing on my computer.  But I realized my laughing and smiling at my computer will probably bring someone else a laugh or a smile and if I can bring a smile or a moment of happiness to anyones life, that makes my day.

"Today give a stranger one of your smiles.  It might be the only sunshine he sees all day" -From the movie P.S. I love you.
